The key to a healthy digestive system…A high fibre diet
Poor digestion is one of the most common illnesses in the developed world. A lack of fibre in modern diets is often cited as a cause of some of these problems which can include constipation, IBS, obesity and even colon cancer. Research shows a high fibre diet can even reduce cholesterol levels and stabilise glucose and improve general health.The health of your digestive system determines how well nutrients get absorbed from your food and how effectively toxins are filtered out and eliminated from your body.
A healthy digestive system has a positive effect on everything from your energy, moods and skin to your ability to fight off colds and flu this winter, and more serious illnesses later on.
The Gastroenterological Society of Australia provides the following advice on keeping a healthy digestive system;
“A high fibre diet including wholemeal cereals, vegetables and fruit is important for health digestion. Ideally you should have 30g of fibre per day. A good balanced diet high in fibre has been shown to reduce the risk of bowel cancer, diverticular disease and heart disease. It also helps constipation. It is important to drink six to eight glasses of water, juices or tea per day. Regular exercise can help a sluggish gut.”
However research shows most Australians don’t consume enough fibre, Dietary fibre is mainly needed to keep the digestive system healthy but it also contributes to other processes, such as stabilising glucose and cholesterol levels and has been linked to IBS, obesity and colon cancer. Also a recent a dietary study in the UK has claimed that people who enjoy a high fibre diet are happier, more energetic and think more quickly.
Tips for a healthy digestive system:
- Increase high fiber foods (Take a fiber supplement if like most Australians you find it difficult to consume the recommended 30grams every day)
- Eat as many fruits and vegetables as possible (Try to choose ones grown in nutrient/ mineral rich soils rather than soils depleted by commercial farming and pollution or take a supplement)
- Choose organically grown dairy, poultry and meats whenever possible
- Relax while eating, chew your food carefully and eat slowly
- Reduce your stress levels (Stress can have a major impact on your digestive system)

I really love foods rich in fiber but the doctor’s advise me not to each to much of fiber as I am suffering from rheumatism and arthritis. I am now doing a cleansing diet, I ate more fruits. By the way, thanks for the information.
